Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Jan 23, 2010 - Jan 24, 2010

The race, which kicks off Speedweeks at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL, is a sports car race that employs both the high-banked track used for NASCAR races and the infield road course. The entire length of the course is 3.56 miles. The race started in 1962 as a three-hour race, then lengthened to 2000 kilometers in 1964, before becoming a 24-hour race in 1966. The winner is always a race team employing at least three drivers because to have one driver go for 24 hours would be both physically exhausting and unsafe. It is not unusual to have some of the popular NASCAR drivers participate in the event to give the race more star power. Race officials have been working to bring down the cost of running a car in the race by changing the rules that allow teams to rebuild cars much easier. The winning car brand has also gotten more mainstream with the early winning cars of Lotus, Ferrari and Porsche, being replaced by Pontiac and Lexus. The winning car usually ends up running about 4000 kilometers. The winning drivers are awarded, naturally, a Rolex watch
